The Andromedae stir plate contains a quiet but sturdy motor and two powerful neodymium magnets of grade N52, the highest grade of neodymium magnet available, superior to the magnets found in most other stir plates. While Andromedae is very powerful for its size, it also has a very low power consumption, which not only makes it cheap in daily use, but means that it can be powered via USB.
We also offer a compact power supply (available in EU, UK, AU and US versions) for those who do not wish to power it via USB.
The Alchemist’s Pantry stir plate model Andromedae measures a mere 13 x 11 x 3.5 cm, but is able to easily carry and stir the contents of flasks up to 2 liters in size, and stand securely on the table thanks to its four rubber feet.
When buying a stir plate from the Alchemist’s Pantry you also get two high quality 2.5 cm (1″) Teflon coated stir bars. The second stir bar can be used to avoid that the stir bar in the yeast starter ends up in your fermenter. Note that flasks and bottles shown in the product pictures are not included.
Stir plates in the brewery
When brewing it is very important to pitch enough yeast and to ensure that the yeast is healthy and ready to do the job you want it to do. The easiest way to achieve this goal is to make a yeast starter using a stir plate.
Making your yeast starter using a stir plate helps you to:
– quickly reach a high number of active yeast cells
– reduce the likelihood of infections
– improve the taste of your brew by promoting a healthy fermentation and consequently diminish the amount of offensive flavors stemming from the presence of excess sulfur compounds, fusel alcohols and diacetyl produced by stressed yeast.
This can be achieved by using an laboratory grade stir plate, but unfortunately these units are very expensive, and quite often bulky and noisy.
Do note that although some of our product pictures shows a vortex reaching from the top of the liquid to the magnet, this is merely for illustrative purposes. We recommend that you set the speed of the stir plate so that at most you see a very small dimple on the surface of your starter. This is to avoid that the yeast is exposed to excess physical stress, which may induce cell stress and production of off-flavors. We have experienced and firmly believe that a yeast starter with a relatively small, but healthy population of yeast will yield a much tastier beer than a yeast starter containing a large population of stressed yeasts.
Stir plates in the kitchen
Just like in the laboratory, stir plates can be very helpful in the kitchen when powders need to be dissolved or something needs to be kept in suspension. Just keep in mind that stir plates are designed to stir free flowing liquids, you should not drown the stir bar in powder or ice cubes: powders should be added gradually and not be allowed to settle around the magnet, and thick drinks with lots of ice cubes are best handled with a blender and a cocktail shaker.
Stir plates and wine connoisseurs
If you have followed Nathan Myhrvold and Modernist Cuisine you may have noted how they aerate wine with a blender – to many wine connoisseurs this is a bit grisly, and some blenders are notoriously difficult to clean completely to avoid residues on the blades contaminating the flavor profile of the wine. With a stir plate the only thing that needs to be in contact with the wine is the Teflon coated stir bar, which is easy to keep clean. A good stir plate also gives you great control over how much you want to aerate the wine, and you have an excuse to take many taste samples as you figure out the perfect level of aeration for a wine!

Payment & shipping
Import duties, taxes and other charges are not included in the item price or shipping charges; they are the responsibility of the buyer. Check with your country’s customs office to determine what these costs will be before you bid/buy. These charges are usually collected by the delivering freight company and should not be confused for additional shipping charges. We only ship to verified PayPal or eBay addresses.
We ship using the Danish postal service, and package the products safely in non-descript packaging.
The Danish postal service estimates the following delivery times to the countries we sell to:
Northern Europe: 2-4 days
Rest of Europe: 3-6 days
North America: 2-7 days
South America: 5-6 days
Australia: 5-6 days
Asia: 5-8 days
These estimates only cover the time from the package is picked up at our facilities and until it reaches its country of destination. They do not cover the time it takes for your local postal service to transport it the rest of the way to you. For countries outside of Europe customs may delay the transport further, this is out of our control.
You may change your mind regarding a purchase within 14 days of receiving it. Electronics and other equipment must be in the same condition as when you received it. Additionally, when it comes to foods, food ingredients, enzymes for food, and food additives, you must not have broken the seal. The reason for this is simple: We can not guarantee the quality of food if the seal has been broken. Consequently, if you want to test one of these products then we recommend that you purchase the smallest amount possible. Please note that we do not refund shipping costs.
